Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Food & Cat Food
These carbohydrate source ingredients are on the list of most common food allergies in pets. Additionally, they are almost always GMO (genetically modified). They’re in pet food formulas because they’re inexpensive and help to bind dry kibbles together.
Here are some additional considerations:
When processed to be easily digestible, corn has high glycemic index (ability to raise blood sugar). High glycemic diets increase the risk of obesity and diabetes in pets.
Soy that is not adequately processed for pet foods can be poorly digested and allergenic. It can also bind other nutrients, making them less digestible for your pet.
Too much soy can cause loose stools in pets.
Wheat is commonly implicated in pet food allergies. This could be related to gluten allergy or sensitivity.

A gradual transition to a new food is important to avoid digestive upset. Start by feeding no more than 25% of the new food with 75% of your pet’s current food for a few days. Gradually increase the percentage of new food every few days so that you transition completely to the new food over 10-14 days.
